What changedNew learning paths: curated YouTube playlists for Search fundamentals and Technical SEO — Google Search Central · 2026-10-06

Do this

Google published two curated YouTube playlists — Search fundamentals and Technical SEO — so start the fundamentals path first instead of hunting through hundreds of loose videos.

You open Search Console, see a chart you half-understand, and go looking for how to actually fix your rankings. What you find is a decade of Google videos — Search for Beginners, Ask Googlebot, Search Console Training, Search Off the Record — hundreds of them, in no particular order, some answering questions you don't have yet. That pile is exactly the problem Google just acknowledged.

On 2026-10-06, Google Search Central posted that it has grouped its existing YouTube videos into curated learning paths: one for Search fundamentals and one for Technical SEO (Google Search Central, "New learning paths," developers.google.com/search/blog/2026/10/seo-learning-paths). Nothing new was filmed — these are the same videos, finally put in a sequence meant to take someone from zero. Google's own words: finding "a clear, sequential learning path from scratch can sometimes be challenging." The series format was built for deep dives and episodic updates, not for a beginner who needs step one, then step two.

Who this is for

This is for the owner doing their own SEO who keeps bouncing between contradictory blog posts and YouTube rabbit holes. It is not a tool, a setting, or a ranking change — nothing on your site changes. It is a free, straight-line reading order from the people who actually run the index. If you've been paying someone a monthly retainer and want to sanity-check what they tell you, these paths are also the cheapest second opinion you'll find.

The series the videos come from, per the source:

Search for BeginnersGround-level basics
Ask GooglebotShort answers to common questions

Search Off the RecordLonger, episodic discussion

Do this week

  1. Open the Search Central blog post dated 2026-10-06 and follow the link to the two playlists from there — that's the authoritative source, so you don't land on a copycat channel.
  2. Start the Search fundamentals path, not Technical SEO. Fundamentals first is the whole point of a sequential path.
  3. Watch in order. Don't skip to the video with the title that matches your current panic — the ordering is the value you're getting.
  4. Keep Search Console open in another tab. When a video mentions a report, find that same report in your own account and look at your real data as you go.
  5. Only move to the Technical SEO path once the fundamentals feel obvious. Technical SEO assumes you already know why the fundamentals matter.

Same videos you ignored last year — now in the order that makes them teach instead of confuse.

Where DIY stops

These paths will teach you to read your own Search Console and understand why Google does what it does. What they won't do is make a decision about your specific site — whether two of your pages are competing for one query, whether a category choice is capping your reach, whether a redesign silently broke tracking. Those are judgement calls on your actual data, and that's the line where watching more videos stops helping.

  • Bookmark the 2026-10-06 Search Central post, not a random YouTube search.
  • Begin with Search fundamentals.
  • Watch sequentially; resist jumping ahead.
  • Mirror each lesson against your own Search Console.
